Check boxes by each email so that I could delete multiple emails at a time

I am writing to say that I have found Thunderbird cumbersome and annoying.

• I wish there were check boxes by each email so that I could delete multiple emails at a time. 
• I'm not sure if it is the choice of font, or the bolding of messages, or the colors, but I cannot look at my inbox and "see" my messages easily. 
• It is also too easy to decide to print a message that I see on the right, but realize once I've hit "print" that the computer wants to print the column of inbox messages, not the message itself - until I go back and click in the body of the particular message.

I've been able to select more than one email to be deleted by using "CTRL Select" and then either click on any of the "delete" or "trash" icons or use the delete key...until recently (last update). Now if I select more than one it only deletes one email in the group. This is amazingly annoying as I need to delete multiple selections.
