Please add support for the Ultra HDR image format (not just the backwards compatible JPEG). When viewed on a compatible monitor, the results are truly impressive.
With Android, Adobe, Chrome, and Instagram/Threads, all adding support over the last year, I think gain-mapped JPG is going to start to take off this year. I'm definitely looking forward to it, as I've discovered a ton of the RAW photos I've shot over the last several years have significant HDR content and they really do look stunning to see in full HDR.
I've seen a lot of "bump" and "me too" posts on the bugzilla thread, but I'd love to see a response from mozilla at some point 🙂
Please note: I have created a related Idea for ISO 21496-1 support, which Apple calls "Adaptive HDR". This format is very similar to "Ultra HDR" (AKA Adobe "Gain Map", AKA Samsung "Super HDR"), also using gain mapping to create a HDR image, and also falling back to universal JPEG SDR support if the monitor is SDR and/or the software only supports JPEG.
However, ISO 21496-1 has the additional advantage of significant cross-platform support, as both Apple and Google are now supporting ISO 21496-1. It is supported in Chromium browsers, Android 15, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.
In Android 15, images are simultaneously encoded in Ultra HDR and ISO 21496-1.
