It would be helpful to be able to export contacts to a spreadsheet, then edit from there, and import the cleaned up contact list.  I'd probably prefer being able to import cleaned up contact list with a new name to be sure everything is OK.  Then I would either just delete the old contact list or archive it [either in T'bird on just as the spreadsheet I started working with.]  I say "it would be helpful", but those of you who know much more than I about these things might have an easier or better idea.  Thanks for reading and considering.

Export as CSV produces a spreadsheet compatible file format. (except older versions of Excel struggling with UNICODE Text)  Obviously, Thunderbird can also import CSV. So I would suggest the option is already available. I was writing blog posts more than 10 years ago about struggles with Excel and CSV import so it is not a new function.

Thank you. Forgive me in advance for asking, but after downloading, editing and saving the file without changing format, could you explain how to delete all contacts and then import?

Sorry, I didn’t look to see if it’s obvious.  At 70, I do best when printing instructions to be on the safe side.
