Multi-Account Containers for Android

The Multi-Account Containers extension is a very useful addon as it prevents websites from accessing all your browsing data by limiting it inside containers. I love this so much as it enhances the privacy. For example, I keep all meta related websites like facebook, instagram in a seperate container. So the only data they can access is between their own websites and not the rest of my browsing habits.

TLDR: Please bring this extension for Android!

In fact, it's urgent. Really. Having the ability to use containers — everywhere, in any and all platforms — is the only way to make internet safe and healthy again.

The only alternative to that is using *different browsers* — which we don't like and which makes both Firefox weaker and users frustrated!

BTW @Jon, how can you guys make external support to an idea be accounted for in Mozilla Connect? Because one thing is liking Firefox, using Firefox and wanting it to further develop and evolve, and another thing would be having to express support for ideas in Mozilla Connect exclusively for that support to be properly considered. What I'm proposing here is, by analogy, what Google decided to do with ratings: besides having its own (Google Maps-based) rating, it also shows ratings that show up in other services (Facebook, maybe TripAdvisor too if I'm not mistaken, ticket-selling websites for sure, etc.). So, likewise, I advocate that Mozilla take into account support that ideas receive elsewhere for prioritizing them for development.

Containers are Firefox's defining feature on desktop, and it's time to bring it to Android. I'd love to have the same level of control over my privacy when I browse the web on my phone as I have when I browse the web with with Firefox on my computer.

With addons for android support blossoming, I think this is one the addons that deserves top priority because it is the only reason i continue to use firefox to this day and to see this on mobile would be an absolute game changer and keep this browser relevant for years to come.

Even though I'd also like to have this feature since it makes login with more than one account on the same service at the same time easy, I just wanted to let other users worried about cross-sites cookie traking and its privacy worries, that firefox android (same as desktop) since March 23 has total cookie protection, so the main worries I read on the comments should be already covered. I.e., Firefox android will already confine cookies just to the site where they are created, thus preventing tracking companies from using those cookies to track your browsing from that site to others. In a nutshell, it works by maintaining a separate “cookie jar” for each website you visit. Any time a website, or third-party content embedded in a website, deposits a cookie in your browser, that cookie is confined to the cookie jar assigned to that website, such that it is not allowed to be shared with any other website.

That said, the multi account containers extension would allow you to log in on the same site with different accounts when using different containers for it, without having to log out first. That is the main difference/advantage these days.

In fact, TCP also provides comprehensive partitioning of other site data between websites in Firefox. Together with the cookie partitioning, it allows to prevent websites from being able to “tag” your browser, thereby eliminating the most pervasive cross-site tracking technique.

So, more and less, even if we'd all love to have this extension on firefox android, at least I wanted to make people worried about cross-site tracking that they already have almost 99% of the same protection.

Although I'd love to see this extension come to Firefox for Android, since it would make login into a web service with two accounts at the same tame easy, I'd like to make most users commenting here understand a few things with what firefox for android already does.

Since March 23, Firefox for android got total coockie protection to be pared with firefox desktop.

This feature allows Firefox to already confine cookies to the site where they were created, thus preventing tracking companies from using those cookies to track your browsing from that site to other sites.

This works by already maintaining a separate “cookie jar” for each website you visit. Any time a website, or third-party content embedded in a website, deposits a cookie in your browser, that cookie is confined to the cookie jar assigned to that website, such that it is not allowed to be shared with any other website.

It also provides comprehensive partitioning of other site data between websites in Firefox. Together with cookie partitioning, these features prevent websites from being able to “tag” your browser, thereby eliminating the most pervasive cross-site tracking technique.

So, even if we'd love to see this extension coming to android, since it'd allowed for other useful features like logging to the same site/service with two different accounts at the same time without having to log out from the first account, the main privacy issue I see in the comments people worried about it should be already covered by total cookie protection.

This was the default behavior on Firefox Focus since January 2022. To enable it on regular firefox for android, you just have to enable "Enhanced Tracking Protection" setting, which can be done either by setting the "Strict" setting, or chose "Custom" settings and enable ETP (instead of the "Standard" protection setting).
