On most Linux-based operating system, a click with the middle mouse button in a text area inserts the content of the primary selection (the last piece of text a user selected). It would be quite intuitive and in line with what other software does if a middle mouse button click on the new tab button in the tab bar opened a new tab, where the new tab's content is as if that selection was entered in the URL bar (either starts a search or opens a URI).

Making moves

I believe what @papush wants has been added in Firefox 115. From the releases notes:

"On Linux, middle clicks on the new tab button will now open the xclipboard contents in the new tab. If the xclipboard content is a URL then that URL is opened, any other text is opened with your default search provider."
