middle clicking on a URL bar suggestion should not steal focus when opening that link in a new tab.

This is not quite universal (the same issue occurs with Falkon browser).

However, 'normally' we use the middle-click to signify that we want a link opened in the background without us losing focus - usually when we want to open a couple of items.

In the URL bar, we might start typing and see several promising suggestions, but if we middle-click them we are taken straight to them in a new tab (losing focus).

I disagree. I really like that it immediately opens in a new tab and gives it focus. I have been using it for a long time and I prefer the way Firefox handles this. Changing it now would alienate all the users who are currently using this feature.

I came to post this exact suggestion. The current behavior is inconsistent with New Tab/middle click behavior elsewhere. If I wanted to immediately open a URL bar suggestion, I would left-click it like any other link. The entire reason that I use Open in New Tab/middle click is because I do not want to immediately look at the link, and in the majority of context that is also the behavior I get. It is jarring and confusing that address bar suggestion links do not adhere to the same behavior.

Right now if I hold shift and click on one of the suggestions then suggestions close. I will also prefer if suggestions don't close after middle clicking on 1 suggestion.
