I like using the menu bar. Having the standard dropdowns that any other program uses accessible is convenient. However, having a special icon for each and every one makes the menu bar busy and distracting.
I am a fully literate adult. I don't need pictoglyphs to tell me what the little squiggles are, as I can read words. If I did need pictures to tell me what the options are, I probably would not want the text - again, to keep that part of my screen as simple as possible.
Please make it a choice; Text, Icons, or Text and Icons, so that users do not have to choose between functionality and reducing visual clutter.
