I think many people including me want to have the Japanese translation option for websites. I need to use now google translate for translating Japanese websites. And I don't like it to use every time google translate for that.
We are making progress. We have an experimental translation model from Japanese to English in Firefox Nightly, and we are working both on the other direction (English -> Japanese) and on improvements to this model.
Great to hear! The tool embedded in my Samsung browser can get a bit flaky sometimes.
Have replaced 2 systems at home with Linux/Firefox/Thunderbird now. Gotta work out the "gaming" box still... though I have always used FF there dating back into the XP days. Once I can work things out with Wine/Vulcan and such, that will go open source too. The only hold out then will be the phones. Still kinda 50/50 on that front.
As a curious slightly off-topic question, since this is a local model, could it be possible for firefox to provide a little pop-up window for translating user-written text? Kind of like a locally running google translate of sorts.
Im not sure if perhaps firefox already has this functionality or not.
We have an unofficial (and unlisted) page called about:translations that may be useful to you.
Just type that into your URL bar.
The page started as a testing area for us during the early stages of developing Translations in Firefox.
Anyone is welcome to use it, however, the UI is not localized (i.e. the UI is only available in English), and we make no guarantees about its stability or support in future version of Firefox.
We may work on an official tool that better matches your use case in the future, but it is not being worked on at this time.
