Status: New idea

As browsers with alternative engines are now allowed on iPhones & iPads due to the DMA in the European Union, I would like to request that a Firefox version with the Gecko engine be developed or released as soon as possible.

See also this feature request (not posted by me) on GitHub: https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/firefox-ios/issues/19063

Gecko and Add On support would be amazing. I’m still waiting for it

Agreed this is an absolute must!

I get that Apple´s rules suck big time and that Mozilla would have to develop two separate versions of Firefox on iOS but I still think that it is worth it!

I thought Mozilla would be ready to update with gecko as soon as iOS is compatible …

This would be great for ios firefox extensions to finally work. I also really want tab groups on firefox.

Thanks for the feedback @cosmus50!

And good news about tab groups, we're currently working on bringing that feature to Firefox. We'll share updates on the progress in the thread here: Native Tab Grouping / More Customizable Tab bar

@cosmus50 @Nich I'm going to move your posts to the tab groups thread, so we can keep this one focused on the original request for Gecko on iOS.

The EU has designated ipadOS as gatekeeper too, just today: https://digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu/commission-designates-apples-ipados-under-digital-markets-a...

That still means maintaining 2 versions of firefox for the EU and the rest of the world, but at least within EU, the user experience could be consistent across Apples mobile devices.

It's kind of easier to measure the performance state within these devices as well, compared to Android

Exactly! I would love to see this in the new iOS 18!!

As was noted by Veddu on the reddit AMA, Japan will also force Apple to allow third party engines. I think it's better for mozilla to do this sooner rather than later, so when more countries follow in the EU's footsteps, the Gecko browser is ready.
