It would be great if there was a way to customize hotkeys.
Here's how I see it:
 * Have a about:hotkeys panel, with all actions listed, and already mapped shortcuts shown.
 * Whether these should be modifiable or not is up to the dev community, ideally they'd be.
 * When clicking on a hotkey field, ideally, there would be a capturing hotkey feature, or, before this, an AHK like syntax to define hotkeys (not as complex, something like: CTRL+H means this and MAJ+ALT+END means that...)

 * a restore to default button.
 * Done.

It can't be done with an extension because some function can't be accessed by extensions (I'm actually looking for a way to send tab to other device while browsing with TST.). Anyway, I believe this should boost productivity in a number of ways. You guys are devs, you know keyboards are faster than mice. 😛

edit: Corrected the typos, it's been bugging me for months now😅

I also wish to change default (ctrl+1, 2, 3..) kb shortcuts. I wish to assign these to Speed Dials.

By setting a key combination, then pressing the key combination, and then performing a specific action. For example, when I create a new tab, I can customize the button combination, and when I press the combination, I will create a new tab. The Floorp browser has this feature, you can refer to it. Floorp Browser is a browser based on the gecko kernel

Two years on, yet such a simple feature is still not implemented. Almost all apps in Windows allow you to customize shortcuts, even Chromium browsers allow you to set custom keyboard shortcuts, and Firefox still in the year 2024 does not have this option!

This is a deal breaker for me. FYI, using Ungoogled Chromium and Thorium now 😏

Many years ago, before the developers changed the API for add-ons, there was an Add-On that could edit or disable the Firefox Hotkey assignments.  I used it to disable CTRL-SHIFT-A.  When the API changed, that Add-On (I can't remember its name) along with so many other add-ons, broke.  I stuck with the previous version of Firefox for years to keep that functionality alive.  When I finally had to update Firefox, my old definition for CTRL-SHIFT-A (i.e. disabled) continued to work.  Now, it appears that Firefox 125.0.3 reset the hot-key table definitions crippling my external program from working within Firefox (again!).  I've had that external program for over 20 years and continue to use it because it is just that good.

It looks like I will have to change my default browser to Chrome or any other browser to keep that functionality I have been using for decades.

It has to be at least 5 years (probably more) that people have asked for this feature to be implemented in Firefox, especially since Firefox has some hotkey definitions for most keyboard combinations.  A lot of these hotkey shortcuts are really unnecessary.  Something as simple as the ability to disable certain hotkey definitions would go a long way towards resolving conflicts with other browsers or external programs (not to mention mistakes due to accidentally hitting destructive hotkeys).

I've been a Firefox user since back when it was called Phoenix Browser, then subsequently Firebird, and then Firefox. Before that I was a Netscape user on Linux. So I've been around a long time. This is my first time logging into any sort of Mozilla website in quite a while (still have my old Bugzilla account though!) and I'm here to voice my support for this particular issue.

In addition to allowing users to customize hotkeys, it would be great if there were also options to disable all as well as individual specific hotkeys.

@ccurzio welcome to Connect 👋 and thanks for the feedback!

There's a separate thread for the option to disable specific hotkeys here: Option to disable Firefox's shortcut keys - feel free to check it out and add your insights there.

Hey all...

A Firefox Product Manager is looking into potential changes around hotkeys/keyboard shortcuts and just kicked off a discussion thread here on Connect to gather more insights. Check it out and add your input — it's a great way to speak directly with the product team. Here's a link to the thread:

Hotkeys? Yes, please!

See ya there 💪

If it hasn't been mentioned before, AutoHotKey is an alternative to waiting years for the devs to get around to planning to plan to put in it in the planning stage for future talks about the next stage of potentially planning.

I also use X-Mouse Button Control for additional customizations.

The great thing about both programs is that the customizations can be either global or tailored to individual applications. I've been using them for years now and are an essential part of how I use Windows.

I use both as well .

but while most problems here can be resolved or worked around with painful ahk scripting (ahk is a plain awful scripting language imho: a lot of bad practice in v1 and a failed attempt at backward compatibility in V2 lead to plain weird syntax things.) a lot of them can't: say your cursor is in a text field, and you want to open a file in a new tab to check something, close that tab, and keep typing. That with ahk, will be hell to script, and I even doubt you could do it only with ahk, since it only manage window based focus, meaning you'd had to also create a FF add-on for the sole purpose of keeping the current field focus... A bit overkill for a workaround, wouldn't you say?

My need for customizable shortcuts is this:

I use a Mac, and often type alt-shift-hyphen to get an em dash. I also often follow that with a space. Sometimes, I don't release the alt and shift fast enough, so Firefox receives an input of alt-shift-space. Firefox appears to have bound this to "Refresh" by default, which means that in any text editor that doesn't preserve history or block navigation, typing a hyphen and a space often results in me losing the entered field of text.
