Problem: Right now, to verify a download I copy the checksum from the source website, hash the file in my OS, and run a string compare command on the result vs the checksum value.

Solution: Functionality to get/ compare the hashes of downloads from the downloads menu/ inside browser. It can take in the the checksum value, and Firefox can hash the download then tell me if it matches the checksum value or not. Could select from a few popular checksum algorithms from a drop down menu like MD5/ SHA256. Firefox

Add checksum verification as a part of downloading file

Add checksum verification as a part of downloading file.

Right now the process of downloading file and checking its integrity are 2 completely separated step:

  • download file
  • get checksum(SHA, MD5, others) on site for downloaded file and use 3rd-party tool to check checksum

It would be nice to have 'Advance options' section on save window. Such Advance section can contain a form with different input for different checksum, predefined pgp key, others.

As a result after downloading file Firefox can verify file with provided checksum automatically.

Similar idea here: Built-in Download Checksum Checker

Ok, clearly my idea is duplication of 'Built-in Download Checksum Checker'. Maybe my idea should be closed.

The reason why I've posted my idea is that I tried to search string SHA, and 'Built-in Download Checksum Checker' isn't showing in search result.

But if try to search SHA256, it will be found. So search engine doesn't work with edge cases.
