Status: New idea

I frequently have to copy the TEXT of a url/link, and currently I have to highlight the link, then use copy to get the text into the clipboard. It would be very useful, and I think simple to program, an additional choice to the right click menu on a url/link, the ability to just copy the text directly into the clipboard. Currently, there is a "copy link" but no "copy link text".

Feature Request: Add 'Copy Link Text' Option in Firefox (Android & PC)

When I was using Microsoft Edge, there was an option to copy the link text when I right-clicked on a link, in addition to copying the link itself. I used this feature frequently. Please, Firefox team, make this feature available on both the Android and PC versions of Firefox as well.

For what it's worth, these are excellent asks. The usability team has been interested in this work, but has not had the capacity to pursue it. In the meantime, Firefox does have "Select link text only"

In our shortcuts: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/keyboard-shortcuts-perform-firefox-tasks-quickly

You'll see you can "Select link text only" with either

"opt" + select link text on mac

or

"alt" + select link text on windows

  1. Could you explain "but has not had the capacity to pursue it" please? I can't believe it's because of the amount of work involved (please see Copy Link Text's code).
  2. Thank you very much for the shortcut, I didn't know it and it's very useful when I need only a part of a link text. 🙂 But it doesn't fully replace a context menu entry (I learn shortcuts while using menus). And it doesn't work on buttons.
  3. This feature is also missing on Thunderbird. How to formally add Thunderbird to Products / Labels for this Idea? BTW, the shortcut doesn't work very well on Thunderbird, since it also clicks on the link.

In terms of "capacity" I am not the product owner of this space, I just happened to know about the shortcut, that's why I wanted to chime in. Because of how small this effort is, I think this has gone undone because everyone assumes someone else will find the time to do it. Now that you mention it, I will see if I can figure out if we can prioritize this given you are right, it is a fairly small effort!

Unfortunately, I can't help with Thunderbird, Sorry.

The alt + select text is much more cumbersome than right click anywhere on a link and choose "copy link text" from a menu.

@Thomas_DC since Thunderbird is a different product, it would be best to submit a new idea for Thunderbird (with the Thunderbird label).

@wildcardcameron Thank you very much. 🙂

@JonOK, I'll do that, thank you.

But what about ideas with both labels? How are they handled?

Do you confirm only labels count, not products? In this case, it would be better to remove this field from the `New Idea` form. (Personally I find these fields have different uses, but if they are not used, don't keep them.)

@Thomas_DC they're shared with and tracked by both teams, but it can get tricky updating statuses when/if one product team pursues the idea while the other doesn't...or the timing is not quite lined up.

Labels and products are both important. Labels are extra helpful because PMs, Engineers, and even users can subscribe to labels and easily organize ideas by labels used. The product field is helpful for us with back-end admin and metrics.
