Copy text from images in Firefox 106 - Mac users, we'd love your feedback!

Hey, everyone!

Karen from the Web Platform Product team tuning in. I'm so excited to share that starting today, you'll be able to use Text Recognition in Firefox on your Mac! If you use macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or higher, you can extract text from your favorite memes, screenshot tweets, and event flyers. Do what you'd like on the Web and spend less time retyping memorable quips or the address for next week's Halloween party.

You now have the text in your (digital) palm--you can copy it, hear it read out on VoiceOver (your Mac's built-in screenreader), and share it with your family and friends!

Curious? Learn more on how to get started here: Copy text from images on Firefox for macOS.

We'd love to hear from you about Text Recognition. How's it feeling? Please feel free to share any feedback so we can improve your experience and optimize performance & accessibility support.

  • Do you usually copy from images with shorter- or longer-form text? (e.g. memes vs. book covers)
  • Are you using Text Recognition more to look up certain things or share information with others?

Thanks, all! Your feedback will inform us on how we can build more meaningful moments in Firefox.

P.S. 🎃🍬 One trick before you treat 🎃🍬: the "Copy Text from Image" command will pull all the text Firefox can register, but you can TOTALLY highlight over select portions of the presented text and copy that instead with Command + C!

How about some more basic accessibility accommodations?

FF is ignoring the basic issues and chasing minor issues.

like:

Allow us to set the toolbar background colors so they do not all blend together. We need contrasting background colors.

Over-ride the asinine Win 11 narrow scroll bars that disappear. We can't even see if a scrolling function exists until we mouse over it. A WCAG violation. Excessive mouse/touchpad manipulation is a violation.

Give us control over text darkness. 60% gray text is difficult to see and read.

FF is barely more accessibly than Edge and Chrome. They both are miserably inaccessible.

Thank you for your feedback, @MarkinIdaho - you're right: we need to do better in providing better accessibility accommodations in Firefox' web experience. We plan to add in more inclusive browser fundamentals, and we'll keep your suggestions in mind as we build out a more robust, a11y-focused roadmap.

Happy Friday, all!

Since the release of Text Recognition on macOS, we've gotten feedback on how to better improve the feature experience (as well as areas of improvement for accessibility). For next steps, we are focusing on expanding Text Recognition to more operating systems and giving our customers more control over selecting and sharing image-based text. I'm looking forward to sharing more details as we iron out some critical points in development.

Thank you, and please feel free to post any Text Recognition/Optical Character Recognition-related ideas in Mozilla Connect for further consideration.

Happy Holidays!

Karen
