Be able to create nested tags in Thunderbird.

I use Gmail at work, and I love the tag system. Now, I'm going to use Thunderbird for my personal systems, and I wanted to setup all the tags, only to discover that I cannot nest the tags.

Example use case: I get a lot of emails from certain companies for two specific subjects. I want to move all those emails to a sub-tag under the tag for that company to keep it organised and easily identifiable which emails are sent for other subjects.

Gmail labels work like folders, which is why you can nest them, but their implementation isn’t standardized. On the other hand, Thunderbird uses IMAP keywords for tags, which are part of the IMAP spec and work with many other email clients.

If Thunderbird were to follow your suggestion, it would have to step away from IMAP standards and create its own system that wouldn’t be compatible with other email clients. For an open-source app like Thunderbird, sticking to open standards makes more sense than going off on its own for something like this in my opinion.
