i have switched from chrome since past 1 month and firefox is just better. the only thing i did not find easy is the option for having multiple profiles to be used at ease, could be better if there was one to easily access seperate profiles for work and home

Add a profile switcher

Hey! More often people use multiple profiles for a browser (eg. work, home, other stuff, dark thoughts :D, etc...). It's a very useful feature to divide specific accounts into categories, to which a lot of people - like me personally - are used to, after years of using Chromium-based browsers. For me personally, it's the only feature that is lacking in Firefox nowadays. And I'm not talking about not having profiles at all, I'm talking about not having a handy profile-switcher, that is easy to access from top bar (eg. between menu button and extensions).

Hey folks! 👋 Thanks so much for sharing your suggestions and voting for better profiles support in Firefox. I'm an engineer on desktop leading work on an improved multiple profiles experience. I'll have more details to share in the coming weeks, including our engineering plans and some good first bugs for folks who want to contribute, but just wanted to let y'all know we're working on it!

Making moves

@jhirschFinally, someone from Mozilla is chiming in. Please save us from having to switch to Chrome by fixing Multiple Profiles in Firefox. Mozilla is losing Firefox users to Chrome! Booo!!! We have been extremely patient. Thank you for your efforts. Looking forward to what is to come in the next few weeks.

Thank you thank you @jhirsch !!!! I've had to switch back to chrome in the interim until Firefox has functional and feature-rich profiling. while you're working on this, adding in the ability to open links in the last used profile (in stead of just the default profile) would be a godsend. that was the straw that broke the camels back in my case. Every time I opened a link from my work app it would open in my personal profile (using nightly vs regular) and I just couldn't do it.

Very excited to come back to firefox!

I agree with the fact that this feature already exists: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1231994#answer-1149335

However, it's true that it's not very user friendly. I use it, but I wouldn't recommend it to most of the people I know.

There are few things that could be done to improve it:

  • To add a way to start the profile manager without having to run a "-p" command line or about:profiles (which sounds like witchcraft for many people).
  • To easily allow to create different shortcuts/buttons to easily start each profile instance.
  • To have different icons or colors in the taskbar for each profile instance running.

Alternatively, there is the "containers" extension, but it has limitations: I tried to use it, but I found annoying that most of settings are shared between containers. For example, if you create a separate container for Facebook, you still have to allow keeping Facebook cookies in all containers, because if you configure Firefox to delete that cookie when closing the browser, that applies to all containers and the session is lost.

Multiple Profiles Within the Same Browser

Create a new space similar to what Safari has but open it in the same browser with a 'Profile Tab' instead of it opening a separate browser for that specific profile. House the Profile Tab or Space in the drop-down or simply make a different color tab somewhere in the tab area next to the recent browsing drop down. Have the option of keeping all bookmarks or just some pertaining to that profile. This is a winner!

This is a really needed feature. I sometimes need to separate my history and bookmarks for personal things and other things. Or don't want to combine my accounts for same websites together. me and my brother want to switch easly our account

Similar idea here: shortcut for different profiles

@radterrax if this aligns with your idea, we can merge the two threads together (and combine the kudos) - that way the conversation stays focused in one space, which is helpful when our product teams gather insights here. Just let me know 😃
