I find the option to enable push notifications for folders (I guess IMAP IDLE?) a bit tricky to locate in Thunderbird.

Most mail clients I’ve used use IDLE by default if it’s supported, so a user switching to Thunderbird could expect to be notified of new emails instantly as well, and could be disappointed when that doesn’t happen.

I think the following would be good options to improve on that:

  1. Add a toggle for the inbox (probably the folder most users care about) during the account setup process, perhaps in the sync options step, with a brief explanation of what IMAP IDLE does and its implications
  2. Enable IMAP IDLE by default for the inbox folder for supported accounts

Personally, it took me quite a while to figure this out. I kept looking through Account Settings > Fetching Mail, suspecting either my configuration was broken or I’d missed the option. Eventually, after some skimming through GitHub issues, I discovered that the setting is actually in the side pane under Manage Folders for each account.

100% agree - this was super confusing for me. I'd also appreciate:

1. some kind of explanation about the tradeoff of why I might not want to enable push

2. understanding why even though I enabled push it still shows "poll frequency -> every hour" in my fetch email settings for that account. I'd think push should disable "poll frequency" / these should be located in the same place.
