Hi folks,
In the next few days, we will start the Nightly experiment which provides easy access to AI services from the sidebar. This functionality is entirely optional, and it’s there to see if it’s a helpful addition to Firefox. It is not built into any core functionality and needs to be turned on by you to see it.
If you want to try the experiment, activate it via Nightly Settings > Firefox Labs (please see full instructions here).
We’d love to hear your feedback once you try out the feature, and we’re open to all your ideas and thoughts, whether it’s small tweaks to the current experience or big, creative suggestions that could boost your productivity and make accessing your favorite tools and services in Firefox even easier.
Thanks so much for helping us improve Firefox!

Privacy isn't the only reason some of us have our udders all a flutter. Also that's pretty insulting.
You might try reading more and stop relying on destructive services that clearly aren't helping your comprehension.
Look into the environmental impact of these toys, you are contributing to the damage we are doing to the planet. Damage our children and their children have to try to survive.

Since you're going down that path, why don't we first ban all of TikTok, Reels, Shorts, artificial adult content and any other brain-rot that doesn't benefit humanity? These require hoards of servers that waste computational power.
Shouldn't we all stop eating non-veg because of its environmental impact (& ofcourse the horrible suffering)? It clearly doesn't have much of a benefit since atleast 30% of India (276mil people) seem to be doing fine.
AI has its positives & negatives as everything else. It's in its very early stages, can be hosted locally which consumes a lot less power, will get more efficient with time and will only require lesser power as hardware with better neural training abilities will emerge.
All the big corps aren't brainless to be chasing AI's heinie, they've thought about this a lot more than you. As we advance, any new tech that comes into play will eat up a good amount of energy.

Part 1: whataboutism. Mozilla isn't handing out free McDonald's vouchers, but they are enticing users into harmful crap. Mozilla says they are better than harmful crap.
Part 2: Big Tech knows best: if you believe this, Google and Microsoft have your back

1) Bruh it's not whataboutism, I'm literally saying everything has its upsides & downsides. Mozilla's enticing nobody, they're just making it more accessible (pretty similar to abortion rights lol). People can try & decide for themselves to see if they find it to be useful or some harmful crap.
2) The heII are you on about. They are not getting any money exploiting us through AI or something, it's literally all their own expense, their own money. They're obviously doing this cuz it will help in their org's growth, we all know they do everything for themselves, and AI everything is for themselves too.
3) Where's this debate going tho? Anything common we both agree on? I'd be fine with this being an add-on with good customizability.

oml pls no ai in fryer fox
11-12-2024 04:41 AM
DEFINITELY ABSOLUTELY NEVER NO!
11-12-2024 07:31 PM
oh god not here to
11-14-2024 12:25 PM
I'm glad they're not deeply integrated into Firefox. This means it would be nice if the dropdown allowed for a custom URL or even local mode perhaps running through openwebui.com.

Is there a way to add custom prompts to the context menu? Sounds like a killer feature!
My attempts to add it obviously failed (I assume I also need to edit "l10nId" whatever it is to make it to work at least). Also, what are the shortcuts? (I see "browser.ml.chat.shortcuts" are set to true 🤔)

This code should not be in Firefox core at all, enabled or otherwise. No problem with it as an add-on for those who want/need it but it is not required for a browser to function so let's not go there. I'm reminded of Netscape who effectively destroyed themselves by bloating the core product and finally killed it off after pushing Communicator onto users who just wanted a browser. Please don't do this. Reading this thread a lot of us feel the same way and I am one of those who will stop using Firefox if this continues.
11-21-2024 05:02 PM
Even if it’s optional, it still isn’t going to be helpful to anyone I believe. Don’t do it!
11-21-2024 05:21 PM
Absolutely no thank you! I don't want to add a sidebar that lazily summarizes something I'd rather read myself. I thought Mozilla had enough respect for their consumers to simply not add in a feature that coddles the exponentially decreasing attention span of the masses, but here we are. Generative AI is not the future.

Just another feedback. I really like the feature. I use chat GPT and it is quite useful. Request for maybe you can add another privacy layer between Chat client if possible and also add the ability to add whatever chatbox you want b/c there are tons of them.
11-22-2024 06:38 AM
Don’t listen to this guy- chat gpt just eats up data online and spits out whatever- not to mention the data processing center is very bad for the environment.

Bloat. Anyone and everyone who is cheering Mozilla for adding "AI" into the browser are google employees and their paid shills.
NOBODY who loves Firefox and wish it well will ever agree to degrade Firefox like this. Whoever came up with adding these kind of junk to the browser should be fired ASAP.
11-27-2024 05:41 AM
Stop it already with the AI grift. No one wants this, no one will use this, no one will befenit from this. It is a waste of both your development resources and the world's natural resources. It is a privacy nightmare. It is a flagrant violation of copyright for private interest. It is diminishing people's ability to think critically, to understand information and news, to imagine, to be creative and to solve problems.
You are on the wrong side of history.
11-28-2024 03:13 AM
Can we have a setting to auto-open the sidebar when the browser starts? The current setup makes the functionality no quicker than clicking on the shortcuts on the open page.
11-29-2024 12:50 AM
Please allow the users to disable it on certain websites... and add it to the standard menu (it should be the same menu that you find when you right click)
11-29-2024 09:44 AM
cant stand it !
11-29-2024 09:45 AM
allow a user to completely remove it permanently ! including from all menus !
11-30-2024 01:48 PM
This is truly a bad idea, and it's making me consider switching to a different browser. I don't want this junking up my life.
12-01-2024 01:30 AM
I tried gemini, it works but it should load in a private container, because I don't want to browse internet while I'm logged in into google. So please add option to load the sidebar gemini in a container.

Please, allow the sidebar to be made smaller. May it be an option as a developer tool to be enabled. This function will bring utility in use cases.
12-04-2024 06:03 AM
There should be a way to access the chatbot without double clicking. Maybe a shortcut or a button. There's screen real estate beside the refresh button.
12-04-2024 07:48 AM
This is such a great feature that I use all the time throughout the day and I appreciate how you enabled a variety of services, similar to your approach to search engines. My feature enhancement request would be a shortcut to be able to go directly to it. Currently I do CMD+B to go to bookmarks then click to AI Chatbot isn't ideal.
Please don't let the pushback from the haters get your down. I have no doubt they were barking when search was added in the address bar too.
Kuddos to your team for adding this!
12-05-2024 02:15 PM
Please don't use dehumanizing language like comparing people to animals. There is definitely hate, but it's not coming from where you say.
12-05-2024 06:01 PM
I like this feature. My main issue is when you're using Gemini, and you're trying to summarize a youtube video, it doesn't work unless I manually copy the youtube address and paste it in the chatbox. You should just pass the address into the chatbot when doing something like summarize or explain, that way Gemini can use its extensions like youtube to pull the data.
12-05-2024 06:04 PM
also provide an easier way to leave feedback so I dont have to go to settings > Labs > Leave feedback
12-05-2024 10:47 PM
I liked the feature. please also add meta ai in the list. I previously seen this in brave browser. But there i dont need any login type **bleep**. so i recommend acessing ai without login will be good. And also need to open the sidebar from the top right corner is also good
12-06-2024 02:52 AM
It's sad that there are so many haters. I find it important to play around with the possibilities of AI in the browser so pleas keep thinking creatively, dear firefox team.
That being said, I find the experience quite limiting. I would have expected to being able to fully "interact" with the website instead of just passing a prompt plus some marked test into a form for me.
I.e. it could be nice maybe that if I use the AI prompt window from firefox, it will have the context of the website automatically and know about this as context (website content and the fact that it is being called from a browser and assisting me from there). So when I ask a question, it will know precisely what we are talking about. And how about handling images?
Keep it up!
12-06-2024 03:01 AM
In no way do I want a baked in Firefox feature to send website context to a 3rd party system. We have extensions that can do that with user consent and control.
12-07-2024 06:48 AM
Totally agree. The browser is basically an operating system within the operating system. Without AI support most of the internet won't be usable any longer and so integration of AI automation/ actions in the browser first hand would be great.
I love firefox and the privacy first attitude behind it and I want to see it prolong into the modern way of working.
12-07-2024 01:46 PM
What parts of the internet are you visiting that are unusable without AI?!

Please add Ollama for privacy 😁
12-07-2024 06:44 AM
Hi, I love the new feature and firefox as well ofc. I was wanting a simple feature like "mark text"->"ask questions / summarize it" for a couple of weeks now. Looking forward to have this feature integrated in the reader view as well.
I'm missing an extra toolbar button to quickly switch between my TreeStyleTab sidebar view and the chat. plz.
12-07-2024 03:21 PM
Hey, personally, I like the new feature, but I would like it even more if there were more AI options and the navigation menu at the top was removed. In the future, it might be great to add social interfaces to the sidebar 😁.

Please don’t add AI features please do not do it.
all AI has done is inconvenience me and it’s environmentally harmful.
