Man this is one sucky connection to gmail. It fails more often than it connects.

This sounds like something that would have been a temporary connection issue, not a bug in Thunderbird.  Is your problem gone?

Anyway, when you do have a problem, it is best posted at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/thunderbird.  Connect is really for discussion and ideas, not support problems.

No... it is very shaky. This is a 4G slow connection at times. I'd have thought that authentication, even on a slow connect, would be no longer that 10 seconds. 

It "feels" deliberately bad by Google as if they want you to use the web interface and get a dose of their advertising.
