Firefox version numbering

Is there a reason why so many version numbers do not complete a sequence before jumping ahead by a major proportion? For example, the last version 126.0.1 jumped to 127.0

This peculiar sequencing has been going on for a while, as if Firefox cannot advance 126.0.1 to 126.0.2, or go to 126.1

Is there a reason why this number jumping has been going on?

The normal numbering sequence is:

major_version.minor_version.whoops_fix

The minor version is only used for the Extended Support Release, such as Firefox 115, which is now on 115.12.0.
