They are currently easy to get rid of.
Type about:config into the search/URL bar.
That will bring up a warning which you'll have to acknowledge.
On the next screen there's a search box at the top. Type or paste browser.tabs.hoverPreview.enabled into it. That will then appear below with the word true next to it. Double-click true and it will change to false.
There's a good chance that this mechanism will be removed at some future point so then we'll have to resort to custom CSS but that day isn't upon us yet.

Just like the forced extensions button so effing annoying. Yet they brag about "customization". smh

That's strange as it still works fine for me. That about:config setting puts things back to how they were until a few weeks ago, ie it gets rid of the new big previews but leaves the more discrete tool-tip that's been there since Noah was a lad.
I absolutely agree that there should be a simple On/Off in the user settings and that "Make Firefox Your Own" and such slogans become less tenable with each up-date.
